The Highlands, Isle of Skye, Isle of Lewis and Harris

Join Juan Pons and our veteran Scottish guide Marcus McAdam, as we photograph and explore some of the best that Scotland has to offer—the Isle of Skye, Isle of Lewis and Harris, and the Scottish Highlands. For ten days we’ll photograph the beauty of Scotland, from the Hebrides to the forests, glens, mountains, lakes and more. We promise to get you to the right spot, and maximize the best light available to us. While we work on the art of seeing and composition in the field, we'll also teach shooting for HDR, panoramas, black and white, and more. We will feature image review sessions and our post-processing workflow in Lightroom. We won't waste a moment—like we say, "we put the work in workshop!" Expect to be up early, and out late. With clear weather, we may even photograph the night skies!

I knew it would be a great trip, but this was magical. With faerie landscapes, misty waters, rainbows, and a few cows, who could ask for more?

General Information and Itinerary

October 15, 2019: Arrive in Glasgow, Scotland no later than 10:00 AM this morning. We will meet at the Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport, located 100 yards from the airport. We begin with a group lunch, then head out to our hotel in Glencoe.

October 16, 2019: Sunrise shoot either down by the water in Glencoe or up in the mountains of the highlands. Breakfast followed by our first image review to check and verify camera technique and composition. This is an important image review as it establishes skills for the rest of the workshop. After lunch and a short break we'll head out for our evening sunset shoot to the Castle Stalker/Kilchurn, located on a small island over a reflecting bay, providing windless conditions.

October 17, 2019: Sunrise shoot up in the highlands where we'll find: Lochen na h-achlaise at Rannoch Moor, Loch Baa, Buchaille Etive Mor (“the Buckle”), The Three Sisters of Glencoe, and more. Back to the hotel for breakfast and checkout. We'll continue on to Glenfinnan for a photo session of a steam train traveling through a scenic landscape, followed by our ferry to Isle of Skye. Once on Skye we'll drive to our hotel at Sligachan, check in, and head out to an evening photo shoot at the nearby favorite place. Dinner at our hotel.

October 18, 2019: Sunrise shoot at the Quiraing, or Old Man of Storr, depending on weather. Either location offers spectacular landscapes with rolling green hills and old craggy rocks. Breakfast at the hotel followed by an image review. Lunch and rest until the afternoon photo shoot which will be a visit to Elgol. Elgol is an amazing coastal scene with towering mountains across the bay and beautiful cobble stones covering the shore. Sunsets here can be the very best, with warm light cast on all the surrounding cliffs and cobblestones. Dinner at the hotel.

October 19, 2019: Sunrise near the hotel where we’ll find streams and moorlands filled with color and mood. We’ll have breakfast and another image review before heading out to lunch and a visit to Talisker Bay for a tour of the distillery and surrounding scenic bay. We’ll finish the day at Neist Point with a sunset over the lighthouse nestled on the steep rocks along the coast. Dinner at a local restaurant.

October 20, 2019: Sunrise at either Old Man of Storr or the Quiraing, depending on weather and what was visited on the 18th. Breakfast followed by checkout. We'll drive to the Ferry that takes us to the Isles of Lewis and Harris. Here we'll check in to our hotel and spend the evening on the beach near the hotel. Dinner at the Harris Hotel.

October 21, 2019: Sunrise at the Calanais Standing Stones, followed by breakfast in a local town. We'll head back to the hotel for a rest and image review. After a lunch we’ll visit a traditional blackhouse village and spectacular arch along the sea. Dinner at our hotel in Harris.

October 22, 2019: Sunrise photo shoot at Garry beach, a large white sandy beach surrounded by amazing rocks. Breakfast and rest. Lunch and camera lesson followed by evening photo shoot at amazing sea stacks. Dinner in town.

October 23, 2019: Sunrise at Lusketyre, another spectacular beach surrounded by rolling hills in warm sunrise light. Breakfast and checkout. We'll take the ferry back to Isle of Skye and drive to Dornie to check into our hotel. We'll spend the evening photographing the famous Eilean Donan Castle. Dinner in town.

October 24, 2019: No sunrise on this last morning, just a nice sleep and breakfast. Following checkout, we’ll drive back to Glasgow for departing flights. Flights home or elsewhere can be made for after 4:00 PM on this day.
